[Review] Gaia GPS (iOS)

Have you been thinking about application that could view topo maps, navigating with offline maps, and tracking with ease on iOS device? There are tons of those kind application these days but only a bunch that shortlisted as good apps. Gaia GPS is one of them. If you never heard of it, go through this link http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/gaia-gps/id329127297?mt=8 or do it later. I would to explain why Gaia GPS is really good apps!

1. All-in-One!

Did I mention that this app is multi-function? You can view topo map, download map from OpenStreetMap, add POIs, tracking, etc. It’s pretty a good deal for $11.59 price! Oh and I’ve heard there’s a promo 50% off for celebrating iPhone 4S launch!

2. Offline Maps!

When you’re hiking, cycling, or doing outdoor activities but suddenly you’re lost in the middle of nowhere and you don’t have reception for..downloading and caching maps. That would be awful. Well good thing is, you can download maps before you go and save it to your iOS device. Gaia GPS using OpenStreetMap data, it’s free and you can contribute to improve the map too! Go to http://www.openstreetmap.org to find out more 😉

Data size that you downloaded is depend on area that you’ve selected on download menu and zoom scale. More areas, more zoom level = more space needed to save your map.

3. Mark Waypoint

Find something interesting during your trip? You can mark it and take a picture while you mark a location.

4. Tracking

Too bad my iOS device (iPod Touch 4) won’t work for tracking because it doesn’t has internal GPS device! So I borrow my friend’s iPhone 4 and tracking can be so much easy, the accuracy may vary and it depends on satellite signal. But I assume that tracking with iPhone 4S would be great because it has GLONASS (see http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html) which is uncle Wiki says:

is a radio-based satellite navigation system operated for the Russian government by the Russian Space Forces. It is an alternative and complement to the United States‘ Global Positioning System (GPS), the Chinese Compass navigation system and the planned Galileo positioning system of theEuropean Union.

That’s my short review about Gaia GPS. Oh, one more thing before using this app, be careful with the battery, your device won’t last long if you use this app for tracking and navigating. Prepare a back-up battery if you want to use this app for long duration. Finally, I rate this app 4.5 out of 5. It could be 5 if the developer working on this app so it won’t drained much battery. I know the battery comes from iOS device but well..I hope the developer could manage and made this app won’t use much power but still has greatness on it 😉

Great thanks for Jeffrey Johnson for let me try this app!
